Southampton youth MP elections

Last week I was able to attend the election evening for the new Southampton youth MP. Cassie Chadbone from Oaklands Community School was elected the new youth MP in what was a very competitive election.
The UK Youth Parliament gives young people the chance to have their say on any issue which affects them, and be listened to by local and national government. It doesn’t represent any party political view as it is only based around issues that young people may have or raise.
Last year Alice Weavers represented the city’s young people at regional meetings and national events. She met with people from all over the UK to debate hot topics like transport, education and personal safety.
In her manifesto Cassie promised to work fairly for all young people. Throughout the year she hopes to:
Ÿ         Prevent bullying in and out of schools and colleges
Ÿ         To fight against the spread of racist attitudes
Ÿ         to listen to anyone who comes to me with their ideas.

A big well done must go to Cassie and all the other candidates, for what was a great evening!

Southampton Uni Conservatives go from strength to strength

On Wednesday evening I was invited back to my old university for the Southampton University Conservative Society's first social of the academic year.

The society at Southampton has always been really strong and the Conservatives have long been the biggest party on campus and this year was no exception, I was amazed at just how many people came along to learn more about the party and politics in general.

I think now is a really good time to get involved in politics. The last couple of weeks have been really exciting. Conference season this year was really good, with another superb David Cameron speech, then we have the ongoing issue over the economy and the American presidential elections are just around the corner and I haven’t even mentioned some of the positive stuff the local Conservative council have been doing since the May elections.

The university has a great programme of events (which can be found on their website) and is due to get some great speakers down this year and have some good socials. I hope that all those getting involved will have a fun time both in Southampton politics and also at the university.

The following is a list of some of their upcoming events a complete list can be found on their website.

Thursday 23rd 8pm onwards
SUCA Pub Meet and greet
Meet at the Stags, go from there!
All welcome

Wednesday 29th 7pm-9pm
An evening with Cllr Jeremy Moulton
Meet our local PPC, and learn about politics in Southampton
Location tbc
All welcome

Helping out at the Southampton University Conservatives Bunfight stall

By Vincenzo Capozzoli in Students

Last Wednesday I was able to help out at the Southampton University Conservative Associations bunfight table at the Universities fresher’s fair.

The society at Southampton has always been really strong and the Conservatives have long been the biggest party on campus.

I was amazed at the amount of students who took an interest in the Conservative Party and the Conservative students. I was able to talk to them about many of the different things we are trying to do locally and nationally and gain their thoughts and opinions on them. One item that constantly got mentioned was student safety and returning home during the evening. I was able to report that Southampton Conservatives have newly approved a five new experimental taxi ranks across the city, in Bevois Valley, London Road, Lower Bannister Street, Town Quay and Poundtree Road. This should go some way to improving student safety and allow students to return home quickly and quietly.

The student branch has a heavily packed programme schedule this year, which includes campaigning locally, listing to guest speakers, including Cllr Jeremy Moulton and various social events, including a meet and greet event held at the Bridge Bar in the University.

I hope that all those getting involved will have a fun time both in Southampton politics and also at the university.
