Its time to back-up the law abiding majority

vincenzo.jpg Thursday, 09 April 09 - 09:33 PM (GMT)
By Vincenzo Capozzoli in Safer Communities

Chris Grayling has spoken about the urgent need to "tackle the blight of antisocial behaviour" in order to fix our Broken Society.

The Shadow Home Secretary highlighted Home Office statistics showing three million acts of antisocial behaviour recorded last year, adding, "And that's only a tiny fraction."

Pointing to the tragic events in Doncaster this week as an example of "a society that is losing its way", Chris said, "They are only the latest and probably the worst example of a whole series of incidents where children are killing or maiming other children."

We have proposed:

  • Strengthening the hands of the police to deal with the problems
  • Introducing grounding orders for young troublemakers, which can be easily enforced
  • Making those who commit serious acts of antisocial behaviour pay for the damage and do community work.

Chris said, "Antisocial behaviour will be punished and the payback will be fast and tough."

And he stressed, "Too little has been done in the past decade. Under a Conservative Government that will change."

Clean up of Priory Road Cutway

vincenzo.jpg Saturday, 31 January 09 - 07:18 PM (GMT)
By Vincenzo Capozzoli in Safer Communities

After correspondence from residents residing along Priory Road and Adelaide Road in St Denys, the cut-way running off Priory Road opposite to the “hard” has been cleaned up. Before the local area team cleaned up the cut-way, it had become very overgrown with a lot of rubbish being left there, from fly tipping. Hopefully this will improve the appearance of the area and deter people from fly tipping along the cut-way.

Cumulative Impact Policy Consultation begins

vincenzo.jpg Sunday, 26 October 08 - 09:16 PM (GMT)
By Vincenzo Capozzoli in Safer Communities

Cumulative impact concerns the potential impact on the promotion of the licensing objectives where concentrations of similar licensed premises are located in one area.

The Licensing Authority is mindful of the problems that can be created when large numbers of premises providing licensable activities are located in close proximity, or where premises densities are out of character with the remaining social infrastructures of the locality.

Consultation will begin to consider whether the Council should identify areas in the city center and Bevois Valley Road which suffer unduly from crime and disorder due to the volume of licensed premises in that area. The publication of this report should made by the 22nd January. Consultation on the proposals is now taking place until 31st December 2008. If you have any views on the proposals the council would be pleased to hear from you before this date. Please email licensing.policy@southampton.gov.uk

On the beat with Portswood Police

vincenzo.jpg Thursday, 09 October 08 - 02:16 PM (GMT)
By Vincenzo Capozzoli in Safer Communities

Last Friday, I was able arrange an evening as an observer to the Portswood Police beat team, looking at some of the issues and challenges they face with regards to student nightlife. I was able to observe PC Andrew Alderson, who is the beat officer for Highfield, as he patrolled the streets of Highfield, Beovis Valley and the University campus/Halls of residence.

Southampton University is a key priority for the Portswood Police team and the Friday evening was the first evening of Freshers Week which leads into the new academic year. For residents feedback has shown that this can be a daunting time as there traditionally tends to be an increase in noise during late evenings and early hours of the morning after students walk home from a night out. The evening’s patrols around Beovis Valley and Highfield were aimed at minimising the amount of noise that students were making, asking students to not shout and scream on there way home. Most of the students we met were responsive towards being asked to be quite and quieted down immediately. Whilst on patrol we also walked around the non- non designated drinking areas of Highfield, enforcing the law where necessary.

We were also able to observe the new Beovis Valley Taxi rank which is now in full operation. Many students were using this new rank which will get them home quicker and safer with the least amount of noise to local residents.

Overall, I thought the evening was success, everybody that was talked to were very responsive to the requests placed upon them and I was very impressed with the work the local Portswood Police team are doing.
