Victory for local community group

I am delighted at the decision by the city council to protect the unused land at the corner of Brickfield Road from development.

A decision was taken back in 2006 by the council Administration at the time to sell the land for housing and when this came to light last year there was strong opposition, led by the local community group (NBSP). In particular I would like to thank Raf Persaud for his tireless campaigning on behalf of the community.

I have been lobbying hard for the past 12 months to keep the site green and to protect the land for the local community. Following the public meeting of local residents last year my colleague Cllr Jeremy Moulton has been working hard behind the scenes to reach an agreement with the University that will see the site converted to allotments. Using the site for allotments was a suggestion put forward at the residents meeting last year and I am pleased that the council has listened to local people and found a way to achieve this.

Councillor Vincenzo Capozzoli

Participating in the common litter pick

By Vincenzo Capozzoli in Parks

Last week myself, Cllr Jeremy Moulton (centre- Parliamentary Candidate) and Matthew Claisse (left- Portswood Candidate) joined local Portswood residents in helping out with the Southampton Common litter pick, organised by the “common sense” group. Along with others we were able to collect a number of bags full of rubbish from the common, which will significantly improve the appearance of the common. Congratulations must go to the organisers of the afternoon as it was a big success.
There has been a huge amount of work done on the little common in the past year with local residents and the hawthorns centre working together. The aim is to provide a more open common improving its appearance and security.
Future events can be found below-
Saturday 26 September     10am-1.30pm vegetation clearance

Wednesday 14 October      1.30-4.30pm vegetation clearance

Wednesday 18 November  1.30-4.30pm vegetation clearance
You can find out more about the “common sense” group on their website.

Redeveloping Portswood Recreational Ground

vincenzo.jpg Friday, 22 August 08 - 11:13 AM (GMT)

Southampton Conservatives are investing in improvements for the city's parks, including Portswood Recreational Ground (Portswood Park). The aim is to improve Portswood Recreation Ground so that it more accurately meets the current and future needs of the local community, schools and dog walkers, by re-designing the layout, signage and infrastructure of the area in line with the national Green Flag criteria.

The key elements to the improvements-
• Redesign access to the park – this should include upgrading the access link to the school (Grosvenor Road & Brickfield Road).
• Define new area for dog walkers.
•  Developing a secure area of the park for block booking that the school could make use of with improved surface, boundary and footpath treatment.
• Tennis area retained but resurfaced possibly extended with small tennis courts
• Replace signage
• Increase profile of the park entrances.
