BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES SUPPORTED BY YOUR LOCAL CONSERVATIVE ADMINISTRATION

Conservatives on the City Council are working hard to attract businesses and jobs to Southampton.

Associated British Ports are to add a 5th cruise terminal,

LIDL are to open a major warehouse in nearby Nursling,

Southampton University have plans for a £116m research centre with marine giant Lloyds Register,

Griffin Hoverwork are relocating manufacturing to the new Woolston development,

Oasis Academy has been granted planning permission for a new school in Lord’s Hill,

Costco have been granted planning permission on the former BAT site in Regents Park.

And – news coming in that Admirals Quay may well be back on the starting block which would be great for Ocean Village.

ALL CREATING LITTERALLY HUNDREDS OF JOBS

Incredibly good news for our city as we fight our way out of the economic mess left by Labour.

Obama's Afghan strategy: a blank page

vincenzo.jpg Monday, 21 September 09 - 07:34 PM (GMT)
By Vincenzo Capozzoli in News

President Barack Obama says he is waiting on making a decision about sending more soldiers to Afghanistan until he has "absolute clarity about what the strategy is going to be."

This declaration will come as a surprise to those who thought he had decided on his strategy for Afghanistan on March 27. Are Obama and his advisers preparing to rip up the March strategy and delete this link from the White House Web site?

The answer is yes. In his remarks Sept. 16 to the American Enterprise Institute, Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Michael Mullen said the administration was reviewing its strategy for Afghanistan, starting from "first principles." Why would the Obama team feel the need to do that? Mullen had an answer for that -- if Hamid Karzai's re-election to the Afghan presidency is not accepted as legitimate, "hard questions" about the viability of the U.S. campaign in Afghanistan will follow.

Obama has undoubtedly concluded that he has little chance of sustaining U.S. political support for the Afghan effort if there is little acceptance of Karzai as the legitimate winner of the election. The best-case scenario is a second-round runoff, which would at least give the Afghan election process a chance to redeem its legitimacy. But a final, well-scrubbed result to the first round may be a month away; a hypothetical second could stretch into 2010. Obama will see no point in making a decision on a new strategy, and the resources such a strategy will require, until a basic premise -- the legitimacy of the Afghan government -- is established.

Obama no doubt sees the advantage of waiting as long as possible before deciding anything. But regarding troop deployments to Afghanistan, practical realities intervene. Pentagon logistics planners require long lead times in order to deliver large combat units ready to fight in Afghanistan. As happened with this year's reinforcements to Afghanistan, Presidents George W. Bush and Obama had to make decisions in the winter in order to get large numbers of additional troops into Afghanistan by the start of the summer fighting season. Should Afghanistan prove unable to select a legitimate president this winter, the Pentagon could cancel deployment orders already on their way. But would the administration want to commit in advance to such a fragile situation?

As administration staffers survey the Afghan election mess, the option of simply leaving Afghanistan will inevitably be contemplated. Such a path would shrink America's physical commitment but hopefully not its prestige or influence in the region. Does such a path exist? Obama may ask his staff to find it.

A trio of councillors are about to plunge 10,000ft for a good cause.

The skydive will raise cash for the Southampton-based disabled children’s charity the Rose Road Association.

City councillors Jeremy Moulton, Ben Walker and Paul Holmes hope to make more than £1,500 for the organisation that provides education and respite care for disabled children and young people.

Cllr Moulton said: “Rose Road does an amazing job working with 200 children and young people with complex disabilities.

“It’s a superb cause and I hope that lots of people will sponsor us if they can.”

Cllr Holmes added: “We are really excited about the jump but a bit nervous. However it’s for a great cause.”

Keep Our Post Offices Open

vincenzo.jpg Monday, 15 December 08 - 04:46 PM (GMT)
By Vincenzo Capozzoli in News

Post Offices are the lifeblood of any community – and yet 4,000 have been shut under Labour and they are planning to close a further 2,500 by 2009.

We are vehemently opposed to these plans, as we believe Post Offices are vital institutions, as important to communities as the local school or pub.

The Conservatives put forward a motion in Parliament calling for an end to closures, but despite the support of 20 Labour MPs, the Government managed to narrowly defeat our proposal.

But you can help us make Labour listen. Sign our petition today and become a part of our campaign to save Britain's Post Offices.

OUR PLANS TO STRENGTHEN BRITAIN'S POST OFFICES

Using Post Offices as Government GP service:

  • We will investigate a scheme whereby Post Offices operate as a ‘Government GP’ for people who have concerns about Government services, including tax returns and pension entitlements

Freeing up Sub-Postmasters:

  • We will rewrite Sub-Postmasters' contracts and allow them to provide a greater range of products and services

Bolstering the Post Office Card Account:

  • This scheme is hugely important to millions of families without access to bank accounts – and we will make changes so they can benefit from the lower utility bills offered to customers paying by direct debit

Encouraging 'Council Counters':

  • We will encourage local councils to see what services they could provide though Post Offices

By Vincenzo Capozzoli in News

Today and tomorrow (16th and 17th July) industrial action is being undertaken by council workers that may affect waste collections, schools, care services and other services.

There is currently a national dispute between the Local Government Employers and the trade unions Unison and Unite over the proposed public sector pay awards, which are subject to government policy.

For more information please visit the council’s website.

So far, none of Portswood’s schools are being closed because of the industrial action.
