Conservatives give you consistently better value
Royston Smith - the leader of the council, comments on the Conservatives in Southampton.
"For the last two years your Conservative Council has delivered the lowest council tax increases ever and this year we will freeze it for everyone. It was disappointing that Labour voted against this freeze. In spite of the financial crisis you will have noticed your Conservative Council has continued to invest in Southampton's roads and footpaths.
We have also protected the front line services that you have told us you care about. Libraries, leisure centres and Sure Start Centres will stay open, and we will continue to empty your bins weekly. Sadly, Labour voted against all of these proposals."

Conservative Council Tax Freeze

The Conservative Administration have agreed to freeze council tax for the next year. We also kept our promises to invest our roads and pavements, protect SureStart and Libraries and invest in more social workers to help vunerable children.
Unlike other councils, such as Manchester and Liverpool, who are closing leisure centres and libraries, we have been able to protect the front line services people tell us they care about.
This is because we have taken decisive action over the past few years to cut out waste and bureaucracy and promote jobs and employment in the city.
Regrettably, Labour have no credible plan to deal with our current financial situation and their lack of an alternative budget means two things;
Higher Council Tax Rises
More cuts to services & more council jobs lost
The Liberals plan to borrow more money to cover the short term which will leave a £4.5 million black hole in the Councils finances. This will mean more cuts next year, and the year after that, and the year after that………

• As promised, pensioners will continue to receive their Fuel Allowance, Free Eye Tests and Bus Passes

Modernising the NHS

Andrew Lansley, Secretary of State for Health, has today published the Health and Social Care Bill 2011.
"Modernising the NHS is a necessity, not an option', he said. 'In order to meet rising need in the future, we need to make changes now. We need to take steps to improve health outcomes, bringing them up to the standards of the best international healthcare systems, and to bring down the NHS money spent on bureaucracy."
And Andrew added, "This legislation will deliver changes that will improve outcomes for patients and save the NHS £1.7 billion every year - money that will be reinvested into services for patients."
We will modernise the NHS by:
- Cutting managers, waste and bureaucracy, and giving extra money to front line services to pay for things like the Cancer Drugs Fund, which is already giving hundreds of patients access to the drugs they need.
- Giving control over NHS services to frontline doctors and nurses and taking it out of the hands of ministers and managers, so that patients get the best possible care.
- Giving local communities powers to stop forced and unwanted closures of A&E and maternity services.
- Injecting real democratic legitimacy into the NHS for the first time in almost 40 years through the creation of Health and Wellbeing Boards, which will drive the integration of health and social care.
- Focussing the NHS on the results it actually delivers for patients by allowing the best people - whether from the public, independent or charitable sectors - to deliver the care that patients need.
Lansley said, "This is the start of a cultural shift to a patient-centred NHS. The proposals set out today in the Health and Social Care Bill will strengthen the NHS for the future and make the changes that are needed to put more patients and NHS staff in control."

Which country do Americans like the most?

Some of these answers seem a touch unfair to me. I would have preferred to see a poll asking Americans about their views of other countries' goverments, rather than the countries themselves. For instance, my guess is that most Americans have no problems with the Iranian people -- but take issue with the regime.
Another curious thing: The United States invaded Afghanistan nine years ago. Now, 18 of Americans view Afghanistan favorably, but 47 percent of Afghans view the United States favorably.

Cameron questions Brown over failure to tackle unemployment

Friday, 13 November 09 - 06:33 PM (GMT) By Vincenzo Capozzoli in Press |

At Prime Minister's Questions David Cameron challenged the Prime Minister over the latest employment figures, and plans for cuts in government spending.
Referring to figures showing that the youth unemployment rate has reached a record high, Cameron asked if the Prime Minister about his failure to keep his promise to abolish youth unemployment.
"Does he accept that by any of the yardsticks he himself set – total unemployment, youth unemployment, the amount of time young people spend unemployed – he’s failed?", he asked.
Moving onto public spending, Cameron said that the "the state of the public finances is so bad" that "this Government is planning deep cuts in every department, including those responsible for helping the unemployed".
To reinforce his point, Cameron revealed a leaked memo from the Business department setting out £350 million worth of cuts to apprentice rates, the adult learning budget, and development loans. "Will he finally acknowledge that he himself is planning to cut spending by government departments next year?", he asked.

Where is the Government's strategy on the banks?
|
|
Wednesday, 05 August 09 - 06:29 PM (GMT) By Vincenzo Capozzoli in Press |

George Osborne stressed that taxpayers are “right to be angry” about Labour’s handling of the banking sector following the results announced this week by Barclays, HSBC, Northern Rock and Lloyds Banking Group.
The Shadow Chancellor said that “profits have been privatised and subprime losses have been nationalised” after Barclays and HSBC reported large profits, whereas the taxpayer-owned Northern Rock and Lloyds lost billions.
George attacked the Government for having “no strategy at all”, stressing:
"Time and again the Prime Minister and Chancellor said they'd stop big bonuses, now we see mega pay packages and massive bonuses off the back of taxpayers' money.”
“Time and again the Prime Minister and Chancellor assured us that they had binding agreements to secure more lending. Now we find lending is falling by unprecedented amounts.”
George also criticised the Government for failing to get the Asset Protection Scheme, which is vital to helping banks lend, up and running.
He stressed, “When it comes to banking this Government offers no leadership, no strategy, and no plan. We need a change of Government."
